The concept of medical apparel developed early in the 20th century. Prior to this, doctors and other health care expert performed their tasks in their regular clothes . Over the years hospital Gown witnessed a transition from being doctor-centric to being patient-focused.

Short History of the Development of Medical Apparel: Medical apparel developed to as a satisfying alternative of the butcher’s apron worn by doctors before performing operations. The idea was to shield their clothing from blemish. Also, introduction of uniforms was an endeavour to associate the values of neatness and hygiene with the medical profession. Until the twentieth century, the medical profession was linked to blood and mess.


A conceptual change was brought about with the introduction of white scrubs. However, the colour white proved very inconvenient. The white uniforms in the brilliantly lighted operation theater caused eye fatigue to the doctor and the personnel. Also, blood and fluid profusion became very conspicuous in white color scrubs. Therefore, white was replaced by green, a high contrast color which even made blood stains less obtrusive. However, the changing phase did not end there.
